Cortland UMC is a gathering of people who are journeying together, working to learn what it means to follow Jesus Christ. A major part of this is learning the church is not a building or place, rather it is the people we are in relationship with. These relationships are not only the people who identify themselves as a part of the church, they also encompass the communities in which we live.
The reality is that if all we do is gather for services on Sunday morning but never make a connection with our community, we are pretty useless. We do not have to look hard to find people in our community who need relationships which will help them find food, clothing, or just get through another day. We are journeying to be a place where relationship is found. A place that is connected to its community, and partners with our community to see justice brought to all people.
Our community on May the 30th 2010 entered into a year of discernment. Just to broaden your understanding of discernment a little. Discernment is a time to choose a path baised on God will. It is a time for the community to come together and to seek God's vision for the life of the church.
